What is bruxism?
Bruxism refers to tooth grinding, especially in sleep. Research has shown that if you grind your teeth when you sleep, the bite forces can be up to twenty times stronger than in the day! This can lead to severe wearing down of enamel, abrasion cavities on the sides of the teeth, sensitivity, early failure of restorations and even cracked teeth.
How do we prevent bruxism?
If you show signs of grinding your teeth, your dentist will recommend that you use a night guard/splint. You wear this while you sleep to reduce your grinding forces and protect your teeth.
What sort of night guards exist?
There are many different types of night guards in the market, differing in size and material. The type which we recommend is the Myohealth Clenching Inhibitor, which has been shown to reduce bruxism effectively while being small enough to be relatively comfortable.
